Marco Oquendo It’s early April on Miami’s Biscayne Bay, with an 18-knot easterly, gnarly chop and ribbons of sargassum seaweed—tough fare for racing any boat. We’re at the 2023 Don Q Snipe Regatta, heading uphill and racing against competitors with decades of experience in the class, as well as a slew of young hotshots and some first-timers—40 teams in all. It’s baptism by fire, my first real experience racing a Snipe. And like many who jump into the boat for the first time, I’m being served heaps of humble pie. About the only time my crew, Danielle Wiletsky, and I see the top of the fleet is when we cross paths on opposite legs of the course. The upside is that we have a ringside seat to their techniques. At one point, we watch as the eventual regatta-winning team of Ernesto Rodriguez and Kathleen Tocke round the weather mark. He hands her the tiller extension and mainsheet, slides back to clear weeds off the rudder, then takes over again. Blink and we’ll miss it. READ MORE

Atlantic orcas 'learning from adults' to target boats

By Victoria Gill and Kate Stephens BBC News Science Team A strange, dangerous game of targeting and ramming into small sailing and fishing boats is spreading through a population of orcas off Spain's coast. Scientists say at least 20 Iberian orcas have now learned the behaviour by copying their elders. It is believed that one or two orcas started interacting with and damaging small sailing vessels in 2020. Scientists told the BBC the animals appear to be "playing" with the boats rather than acting aggressively. Have orcas really been 'attacking' boats in the Atlantic? It isn't revenge [against boats], it isn't climate change, it's just a game and that's it," said Dr Renaud de Stephanis, a scientist based on the south coast of Spain. Dr de Stephanis is president of Conservation, Information and Research on Cetaceans (CIRCE), a marine conservation organisation. He said the orcas, also known as killer whales, appeared to be playing a "game" focused on the boats' rudders - part of the moveable steering apparatus that sits in the water. He and his colleagues have now pinned satellite tracking tags to the fins of two of the fewer than 60 animals in this population, which is critically endangered. READ MORE

In this report, Moose shares how as parents they introduced the sport: When we had our daughter, we were keen that she get into a sport of some kind to socialize and stay healthy. We had her take tennis lessons, she played soccer, tried swimming, played softball, and ran cross country and track. For each sport, it was all with no intention of it becoming an overwhelming part of her life but more to keep her involved and hoping that she would click with one of them (she still runs daily). As we were sailing all the time, we decided that she should learn that as well, not so much that she would become a racer but that we could do more things together, and understand why dad kept disappearing for weeks (or months) at a time.READ MORE

Providing balance to fuel enthusiasm Published on May 30th, 2023 Ethan Doyle, a lifelong racing sailor in Northern California, is a newly inducted “Opti dad” and shares observations from his first 12 months in the modern era of Opti-land: For starters, I have witnessed many positives within the US Optimist Program. The level of sailing at the top of the Opti circuit is incredibly high. The kids are focused, the coaching is sophisticated, and the United States Optimist Dinghy Association does a wonderful job introducing the kids to a high level of formal competition. Despite wanting to race a higher performance boat and go fast all the time, my 10-year-old has been convinced that the Optimist is the best racing development platform for a kid his age/size. He loves sailing, loves competing, and thus has jumped in to Opti-land head first. But to provide balance, I make an effort to get him sailing on all sorts of other boats from keel boats, to dinghies, to foiling (when he’s not skiing, mountain biking, or playing lacrosse). Grueling sailing race takes competitors 36,000 miles around the world while collecting climate data

The world's longest and most grueling competition is underway as competitors adventure 36,000 miles around the planet on sailboats. The race is intense — but it's not just about winning and glory. The sailors are also part-time citizen scientists competing on boats outfitted with tools that gather data on how climate change is impacting the world's oceans. The sailing competition, called The Ocean Race, started in January. Those competing started in Spain, then raced down the coast of Africa before cutting across the Indian and Southern oceans to reach Brazil. They then headed up the eastern coast of the Americas before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to get to Denmark. This week, the teams will leave Denmark on the final two legs of the race, which ends in late June in Italy Charlie Enright, the skipper of a 60-foot long sailboat and leader of the 11th Hour Racing Team, the American competitors in the race, uses fin-like hydrofoils to propel his sailboat to speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. During the race, he and his team have fixed everything from torn sails to busted rudders, while using instruments on board the sailboat to gather data on climate change. This is how to save amateur sailing Published on June 5th, 2023 by Janet LaffitteHow do you keep amateurs engaged in racing when the professional sailors dominate not only the standings but the fleet itself. The J70 Class, nearing 2000 boats, is feeling that strain. In the USA, there were five Corinthian teams out of 34 boats at the Miami Bacardi Cup; the Midwinters had ten out of 50. At our local level in the Pacific Northwest, we are experiencing an explosion of boats, thanks to the amazing generosity of pro coach Ron Rosenberg. (See North 48 June 2023 issue for more on that story). Still, there are a handful of boats from our fleet that enjoy traveling and mixing it up with other sailors. We wouldn’t like to see the fleet die out because of the over-inclusion of pro sailors. I don’t mind sailing against pros but other amateurs may tire of always finishing deep. What just happened in Riva del Garda, Italy started as a spark and is now a wildfire. An idea by the Italian J/70 Class to host the 2023 J/70 Corinthian World Cup on June 1-4 sold out in 90 minutes, initially capped at 80 boats and subsequently extended to 90 boats. READ MORE
